HYDRAULIC SAFETY CERTIFICATION WORKSHOP -
Salt Lake City, UTAH
- TBA

Hydraulic Safety Certification Workshop for Technicians that work on Aerial Platforms, Scissor lifts, Bucket trucks, Cranes, and Hydraulic Systems on High-Risk Machinery.

This workshop is designed for maintenance supervisors, safety supervisors, and maintenance personnel. It covers all facets of hydraulic system reliability on "high-risk" vehicles and machinery such as aerial platforms, scissor lifts, bucket trucks, cranes, elevators and amusement park rides. The workshop will be presented by renowned hydraulic safety expert, Rory S. McLaren.

Should you attend this workshop?
Two types of failures could end the lives of people that work on and around "high-risk" vehicles and machinery - structural and/or hydraulic system.

Are the people in your company, that perform service and repair work on hydraulic systems, trained in hydraulic safety? Are the people in your company that "certify" (sign-off) that "high-risk" vehicles and machinery are safe to operate, trained in all facets of hydraulic safety? If your answer is "no" to one or both questions, it is your duty of care to attend, or have them attend, this workshop.

Your workshop leader, Rory S. McLaren, is a recognized expert in hydraulic safety. He has taught hydraulic safety for more than three decades. His work in accident investigation and reconstruction allows him to see firsthand what happens when untrained mechanics make mistakes when working on hydraulic systems.

CASE HISTORY:

An untrained rental company mechanic made an error that caused the operator of a long-reach forklift to lose his life. He must now live with the thought of knowing he killed someone because of his ignorance.
Don’t let this happen to you.

NOTE: This is NOT a course in fundamental hydraulics or hydraulic system troubleshooting. This is a course in hydraulic safety as it pertains to "high-hazard" vehicles and machinery.

This workshop will cover the following topics:

1. Hydraulics 101 –

Hydraulics 101 is a "light-hearted" course in fundamental hydraulics for non-technical people.

2. Hydraulic Safety. –

Hydraulic systems have the inherent ability to inflict a wide variety of debilitating injuries, which include; severe burns, oil-injection, lacerations, disfigurement, and blindness. Many victims suffered fatal injuries. Hydraulic systems can also cause extensive property damage, which includes fires and explosions.

Rory has what is arguably the largest data base of accidents related to hydraulics in the country. Over 99% of the victims of these hydraulic accidents are regular, hard-working individuals just like you. They did not receive vital safety training and their ignorance caught up with them.

This is a "learn from the mistakes of others" safety presentation. You will see how situations went terribly wrong while mechanics were doing things that are classified as "routine" in the fluid power industry.

3. Oil Injection –

Oil injection injuries are not common but occur with enough frequency that all people that work on and around hydraulic systems must know how to properly manage them. What might present itself as an innocuous wound can rapidly deteriorate into a life and limb threatening situation.

FPTI™’s award-winning DVD, “The Lethal Strike,” shows how oil-injection injuries occur, how to properly manage them, and how to avoid them. At the end of the presentation, Dr. Luers will explain in excruciating detail why an oil-injection injection injury must be treated as a surgical emergency.

4. Stored Hydraulic Energy/LOTO –

Machinery and equipment manufacturers warn about the consequences of discharging stored hydraulic energy to the atmosphere. However, their hydraulic systems are not designed to allow mechanics to "detect and diffuse" stored energy. Hydraulic systems have the inherent ability to store “pockets” of energy after shutdown.

You will learn how and why hydraulic systems store hydraulic energy, what devices are available to "detect and diffuse" stored hydraulic energy, and what actions to take if there is no way to detect or diffuse hydraulic energy.

5. “Load lock” Valves –

All motions on "high-hazard" machines are controlled with hydraulic cylinders, which are steel cylindrical tubes into which oil is pumped and then released. The oil is pumped into the cylinders through a combination of steel and flexible transmission lines.

If a transmission line fails, it will cause the mechanism it is supporting to collapse. Since it is possible for an oil transmission line to fail, special valves are attached to each cylinder's oil entry/exit port to "lock" the oil in the cylinder in the event of a transmission line failure. These valves are pre-set by the respective manufacturer and MUST NEVER be tampered with. Moreover, untrained mechanics have been known to screw them out while they are supporting loads.

You will learn the different types of "locking" valves, how they function, and why they must NEVER be tampered with.

6. Proactive Maintenance –

The safety and reliability of hydraulic systems are directly proportional to the maintenance they receive. With respect to hydraulic systems, there is no room for error on “high-hazard” vehicles and machinery. Hydraulic system reliability is not “built-in” or guaranteed. It is sustained through exceptional maintenance practices.

You will learn how to develop a proactive maintenance schedule that far exceeds the limited procedures recommended by the respective manufacturers.

7. Oil Filtration –

A hydraulic system’s filtration objective should be to clean the fluid to a point that contamination is not the factor in the degradation, obstruction, intermittent, or catastrophic failure of any component in the system during the desired useful life of that system.

From all accounts, the root cause of over 90% of hydraulic component failures is contamination. It’s obvious the filtration objective, for most hydraulic systems, is not being achieved. You will learn about: ISO 4406; how to set a hydraulic system's target cleanliness levels; what "range-code" numbers are; why filter elements are not all created equal; why you MUST NEVER use substitute filters.

8. Oil Transmission Lines –

Oil transmission lines are vital arteries through which hydraulic power is transmitted. A breach can be fatal. You will learn: why you must never construct a hose assembly unless you are certified; how to use a hose/tube "projectile" cleaning system; why you must never use a carbon/general use "chop-off" saw to cut a hydraulic hose; how to select an outside hose contractor that is competent to make hose assemblies; why you must never allow outside contractors that fabricate hose assemblies to install them, with few exceptions; why you must NEVER “re-end” a flexible hose.

This presentation: "Hydraulic Hose Safety" will be delivered by an expert from Gates Corporation.

9. Component Substitutions –

A machine is down, and the manufacturer cannot supply the parts you need? Why you must never make component substitutions without getting written permission from the respective manufacturer.

10. Component Rebuild –

Is your component rebuild center competent to repair hydraulic components? Did you know that hydraulic component rebuild centers routinely modify components (especially cylinders) without your permission or permission from the respective manufacturer?

You will learn how to: select a competent hydraulic component rebuild center; why it's vital to receive failure analysis reports; why rebuild centers MUST tag rebuilt components with ALL relevant test data, how to write a purchase order that keeps your rebuild center honest and keeps you and your company out of court.

11. Diagnostic Instrumentation –

In order to ensure mechanics work is safe and accurate, and hydraulic systems are operating within prescribed operating parameters, there are five (5) diagnostics instruments mechanics MUST have.

12. How to Inspect a Vehicle's/Machine's Hydraulic System –

Performing a pre-delivery or post-repair inspection is a big responsibility because you are signing a document that states the vehicle you inspected is safe to operate. If you do not have the proper training in hydraulics, you could be signing an operator's "death warrant."

You will learn how to identify problems that, if overlooked, can result in widespread injury and/or death. This is a hands-on workshop. You will be learning with the aid of state-of-the-art hydraulic training simulators that have the identical hydraulic circuits and components as those found on high-hazard vehicles and machines.
